Quote: Happy memories from all that gear!!

Yeah, I have sold a lot of things that I kind of regret parting with a bit. I wanted the space in my tackle room and managed to achieve that but there is still a tinge of sadness even though it was items that I would never use any more.🙁

Quote: Gardner monkey climbers, with 3 clear bodies and 3 orange bodies

they were awful forms of indication...particularly when you had a sandy swim and rain, laced with sand, splashing up the needles. Have you ever seen the indicator glued to the bottom of the needle and the reel frantically churning backwards with a ferocious take!

Old things I have that I still use today:

Old 5ft landing net pole, solid unlike the ones today. Don't know the make.
Loads of Gardner Bank Sticks, the black extendable ones with the brass ferrule and screw. Also, the original Gardner Pod has gone, god know's where.
Gardner monkey climbers, with 3 clear bodies and 3 orange bodies. Use them for catfish with open bail arm.
Mk1 Armalites 3 x 12ft 2lb-ers, use for pike fishing now.

I've also sold some stuff recently (this decade say) which was a bit old, from the 90's.

50" Nubroli Weavelock Brolly plus Nash Overwrap.
Loads of Shimano Aero Baitrunners
Original Fox 2 legged bedchair.

Happy memories from all that gear!!

Yeah, remember getting my Avons and it was absolutely inconceivable at the time that I'd EVER need something that went higher than that!

One of the pictures reminds me that I still use my first set of "Avons" to this day for carp fishing, I bought them in the 60's when I first started carp fishing, the ones that went up to 32lb as they covered everything that I would catch in them days and then eventually got a set that went up to 40lb.

Bought a Gardner pod when I fished a pit with impenetrable gravel banks , thought |I'd hit the jackpot..it was horrible with three rods on it.
pretty sure I have one of the adjustable 3 rod bars knocking around the shed and the brass adjustable bar ends.
Could only find two of the monkey climbers.

You're not wrong...sounds like you have some amazing bits and pieces that you are still putting to good use.

I quite like mine...I like being low to the ground and never do more than 24 hrs so don't really have much stuff that I need to store plus I am open brolly mostly these days and need the bed to be low to tuck in under the brolly😀

I am more than a little concerned about your suggestion that rats are going to jump up and join me if I am low to the ground....I don't like them scampering around anywhere in the swim but hopping up onto the bed with me...NO THANK YOU😱😱😱

He did a lot of time at Jennetts as he lived East the Water at Bideford and could be there in 5 minutes near enough. He wrote an article in a Nutrabaits catalogue about pre baiting the place and catching the big one from there can't remember what that damn fish was called, was it Scarface or something...got moved to Melbury soon after.

Great stuff...built to last...apart from the foam in the headrest!

I always think if you find a chair that's comfy, stick with it, as some chairs are just horrible, even expensive ones, I think it depends on your personal body shape and some are a fit and others not.😎

I sold that one to a chap in Plymouth, who wanted a pod for Cadover, and Crafthole

Bought 2x Sodpods ,which I still use to this day ,I fish 2 × 1,never a third on same bar ...

Lovely ,lovely pics of Tamar ,my fave place other than Tredidon ,Dutson ,Shillamill,Oak lake ,Kingfisher ,and many many more, some that have shut down or private......orrrrrr,I still fish em ...👍

There was two guys from back in the day I knew as well from Lanson Mike Bolt ,a very recognised man as he had very curly hair and a polio limp sadly ,he had Tamar 20s photos in Homeleigh, and Mike Summers tackle shops and his mate Roger Finnemore, from Kelly Bray ,sheep farmer and winner of Masterchef...!

I did a week's sponsored fish ,in 92 to raise awareness of the Children's hospice Southwest, and members of the launceston massive,on lower,Evelyn Stacey asked us to trial Upper, as it was reputed to hold carp before the 'moving 'of some them by rod n line and Framlingham netting team, the godfather aka Ken showed the photos of lower totally drained...was interesting..

I got sponsored by Gary Thomas ,Cypro baits and College fame, his lovely wife being on front cover of Carpworld and many well known shops , companies at that time...

Once I get into old skool mode all my memories come back ...I have several hundred 35mm pics of old skool kernow stuff but no one would be interested unless it was on Yately etc ....BUT for sure we have our own history and stories characters as well, but the coming of the otter and defunct Tamar Otter hell place destroyed many places some never recovered ...nuff said!

Also I'm pretty sure that's Hugh Parkyn helping you weigh a Tamar beauty, think he did some time on the lake nr Powlers piece garage ,aka Melbury, home of the old record Perch I believe...

A picture from today, my Fox Voyager chair, and on it a Nash smock, both must be at least 24 years old. The foam in the chairs head rest has turned to powder 😢 and the thought of replacing it doesn't appeal as I like to put my feet under the chair when sitting, something modern chairs don't allow you to do on the whole! I'll find a pic of the chair from however long ago, I know it was with me at Joncherry in 2002 and possibly before!

EDIT...oh...and the grounsheet, from the 1st Fox Eurodome..must be near 30 years old.

It sounds as if it was quite common to cut down bank-sticks for the Gardener pod to keep it nice and low...I took a hacksaw to mine too, in an attempt to lower everything. Pod needed on the shingle/rocky bank at Lower Tamar (1988)

but not needed on the Grockle bank. (1985)

Success at Lower Tamar..Yaay! (1988)

I still use a 50 inch brolly and wrap even today, when swims are tight...

Aaand,,I had a custom sprayed 44 inch Gardner pod ,with the legend in brass 'The Pod'plate over the monkey climber bar,I cut down the gardner banksticks ,polished all the brass, screw threaded bits on in,looked very low and very cool for its time...my Mrs made a custom sleeve to stop it chipping as well..

The brass plate, came from Bodmin sports trophy shop Mr Chipman whose son Tony is a very fine chap and carp angler/angler in general...

I have loads of "Antique" stuff that I use to this day for fishing: -

My steel mug and aluminium water bottle, matching set, are army surplus and stamped 1956

My plastic water bottle is 1963, Vietnam war army surplus

My two best fishing jackets are labeled 1954 and 1958, both Belgian Para army surplus, ex 1964 Congo, both different camouflage schemes, one of them valued over £200 and the other £300+.

As for tackle, I have loads from the 60's that I occasionaly use.

About the worst item of equipment which I still have and will never use again is the "Terry Hearn Stealth Bedchair", absolutely useless and worst bed in my collection. Claimed to give you more space in the bivvy with it being low, but what good is space above you, and barely no space to put bulky bags etc under the bed, what you supposed to do, dangle it from the roof of the bivvy? Even my Fox Double sided tackle box was to big to put under the bed as I would sink down onto it and to top it off, it was easy for mice and rats to join you if anything was dangling over side of the bed and I'm sure rats would jump up as well as climb up.

Then it only has about 6" of leg adjustment, useless on a sloping bank.

Also a "Raised Head" end, only good if you sleep on your back, try sleeping on it on your side for a long Winter night and you feel as if your neck is broke, and if you try and sleep on it face down or partially, your head and neck are bent back as if your a Gymnast.

Only someone with no knowledge of one would buy one second hand!!!

I had a gardner pod exactly the same, used it for years, simple but very efficient

Yeah, did the job when there was little else on the market...had to use short bank sticks with it as the normal long ones made it top heavy and wobbly as hell🙁
^how NOT to set it up....and don't get me started on those original monkey climbers.....plus the legs are splayed in, instead of out, for stability in this pic

Did someone mention Gardener rod pods?

Points of note;
Mk 1 Gardener rod pod.

PTFE Monkey climbers.

Converted Optonics with GPO speakers and elastic bands hanging from the buzz bars..these are instead of an on/off switch; they are permanently off but there is a magnet and reed switch mounted on the end of the roller arm that automatically turns the buzzer on when you get a take..so the elastic band goes over the wheel when you pack up, so it does not keep going off in transit.

Cables from buzzer heads to sounder in Bivvie.

Home-made unhooking mat from a rubberised weigh sling turned inside out, filled with foam and stitched up.

Blue noddie suit, Boom 80 boots, Barbour waxed cotton cap.

Bivvie…can’t remember.

Aerlex reels, rods, I think are Hutcho Horizons.

The tarn pond… formerly known as Cutt Mill.

Pic taken about 1990 'ish, maybe a bit earlier😎

Loads of my gear is ancient, some of it could be improved but I'm not bothered, getting the pleasure from owning new equipment is not my thing.
Not sure how old this is but at a guess 30 years

Hiram was a gem, sadly missed rip mate.

Got a Fox pod bit like the early Gardner lollipop ones but better.
A Kingfisher rig wallet that's still going.
Cygnet net & spreader from long before trakker got involved, bought after leaving my north western behind at a local fishery.
No it didn't get handed in 😡

I used a trangia for a very long time but only have the burner left now...I found it a bit bulky
if I just want a hot drink all you need is the burner and a cross thingy

but now I just use this as I didn't like the faff of meths and was paranoid about getting it on my hands and then touching bait

Im still using a Wychwood sleeping bag I bought in the early nineties. 30+ years and still going strong… i admit to recently looking at alternates though as it’s not as warm as once was now it’s missing the removable fleece liners. It was top end gear at the time, over £100 and real extravagance then!

I’ve still got mk1 armalites with aero bait runners from the same era, but they don’t get used much, more for a bit of piking on the winter

I had a JRC Super Cocoon 2 legged bed from new, which I finally retired after 27 years lol. It was a bit like Triggers broom as it had had 2 new mattresses and at least one extra set of legs over the years!
It still had loads of life in it when I eventually gave it away to a youngster!
