Sounds like they are territorial then, I guess, or at least aggressive toward intruders to their "gang"

I know when they are fighting over a bag of chips at the seaside they can be properly nasty🙁

Interesting......did you just tie a length to the boat and have it trailing behind it? How long a length and did it need to be a hi viz colour?

@RKB: I'm all yours, when do you need me?

With regard to drones, they're not scared of them. I was trying to do some footage of an estate lake I fish and it only took 30 seconds before they were brazen enough to start getting close. They then got real close over the next 10 seconds and I thought one was soon going to Kamikaze the drone and it'd drop in the drink, so I hurriedly flew it back to me and never got it out again.

I found it was the braid as when tied to my boat they wouldn’t dive on that either but without the braid they would

A few weeks ago there was a work party on the club lake, they were strimming the far bank.
The seagulls were completely thrown by the noise, probably the first time I've been able to use a catapult without giving the flying rats a free meal.
Week after that the village pub had a live band on, the music echoed across the fields and again without a definite sound to home in there would only be one or two half-heartedly circling instead of twenty.
Didn't really help that much because half a dozen mallards dived on my baits all day. Although it was fun watching the gulls trying to mug the ducks as they surfaced.

If you do a bit of practice just before dusk, you can get your arm in, so to speak, then bait up just into dark, the gulls tend to piss off to their roosts as it gets dark.

There is a natural sweet spot where it’s light enough for you and the gulls to see the splashes, but not light enough for them to take advantage of it! Unfortunately it only lasts about 15-20 mins until you can no longer see the splashes yourself, but by then you should be in a good enough rhythm to be near enough by the sound of the splashes.

I'm thinking of doing a little experiment and try the throwing stick just on dark...when I can just see the splashes of the baits going in but not the baits in flight...try and simulate the misty conditions.
Or I could just put it out during darkness...not so accurate but at least I have some free offerings in the area and a good wide spread can often work in your favour.

One of my club lakes has no gulls at all.....it is only lightly carp fished and has remained off the gulls radar, so far...it makes such a difference, not having to worry about those little t*ssers!

It's the spomb/spod they won't dive on. I use dark green j braid and they won't drop on a spomb.

When using a throwing stick cast a spod out with bright yellow braid and the gulls don't take your bait

It’s the line they are scared of
Use floating yellow braid on your spomb and they’ll never dive near it
