Been wearing merino for a long time, some of my best cycling jerseys and baselayers are merino (rapha, endura, albion). I wear a couple of these for fishing too as the breathability over long walks is great and yes would recommend them to anyone. The problem is when you've arrived at your swim and cooled down. I d'ont always take a brolly unless its really going to hoof it down and once I've cooled down and the sweat has evaporated the cold can quickly take over. Think I just feel it a lot more as I'm getting older

I've had various bib and braces etc over the years and still own a Fox Ventec all in one suit I bought from Leslies back in the 90s, but that is just too warm for walking any distance. With the advent of new technologies I was hoping I could narrow down to a decent pair of bibs that are properly waterproof and warm, along with some breathability. It's almost an impossible triumvirate for the angler so layers are usually the way, but on those really cold and dank December days when its constant drizzle, low cloud and gloom, there's nothing nicer than having a thick outer layer on to trap the body heat.

The one thing that interests me most about the helluva range is the outer material. It's clearly waterproof to start with (no idea about longevity) but is described as heavy weight almost waxy...could it be the ideal solution?

I'm currently using a Deerhunter jacket and trouser set which is really good but doenst really have the long waterproofing for sitting around in. Combined with my old issued goretex is okay but not really warm enough.

Searching for the holy grail I know but thanks for your thoughts gents.

Btw...M&S do (or did) a range of thick merino baselayers a few years ago. The bottoms are great although have gone a bit baggy. Probably like me tbh 😂

Not sure if you’re using base layers but the most crucial part to keeping warm is what’s next to your skin. Merino leggings and a long sleeve Merino top are game changers in cold conditions.

I don't have the exact product you are looking at, but from the same series albeit older i have the (had to look it up) Nash ZT Polar Quilt Jacket. All i can say, amazing. It has some 3m filling from the highest specs, and well, it's extremely warm, keeps the wind out, light af, i never had a better fishing coat. So if they keep up this quality, the one you are looking at should be good too.

Hi all.

I'm considering buying a pair of these for my winter river fishing. Really need something very warm and waterproof. Have tried all sorts over the years, including layers with my old army goretex (dpm, issued 91, still going strong...) and other brand bib and brace but at 55 I'm starting to feel the cold more with crap circulation.

These look the part but can anyone say if they perform as good as they look?
